After starting his career as a still photographer for Time Life, Aronson began directing television films and commercials. Through Aronson Films, he directed MTV videos, television pilots and specials and over 500 commercials before turning to documentaries in 1999. Since then, Aronson has made award winning documentaries on a fascinating variety of topics. He is also a concert pianist and regularly plays chamber music in New York and at the Telluride Musicfest, the chamber music festival he founded in 2002 with his wife, violinist Maria Bachmann.
When I began researching this film, I found many videos had been made about this well-known artist. But something fascinating about his ultimate work process grabbed my attention, triggering something very personal in my own artistic growth; that revelation revealed the path forward for me to make a film focusing on something unique about Aris’s method of work.
So, in “Aris Demetrios: Sculpture From The Heart,” I set out to explore this raw process of creating sculpture developed by a master artist in the last decades of his life. It was at this mature stage of his career that Aris began making small wood-carved maquettes as a basis for large scale works that were not just aesthetically beautiful, but also celebrated the human form and spirit.
Using interviews and footage of Aris before his passing, as well as conversations with those who knew and worked with him, I set out to present an unfiltered intimate look into the mind and heart of an artist who lived and breathed sculpture for 60 years. This film is a celebration of Aris Demetrios’s life's work, but also, for me, it was a personal contemplation of the process of artistic expression itself. In the making of the film, I was touched and inspired by Aris's methodical approach, his rigorous work ethic, and his unwavering dedication to craft.
Ultimately, I hope this film is a tribute to those qualities in this artist. And, I hope the film invites viewers to appreciate the beauty and transcendent power of art.
