Bec Pecaut is a non-binary filmmaker with dual citizenship, splitting their time between Los Angeles and their hometown of Toronto. They graduated from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study with a self-titled degree in “Storytelling.” Bec went on to complete their MFA at USC’s School for Cinematic Arts in the Writing for Screen and Television program where their feature script, The Terrible Child, received the Jack Oakie Endowed Scholarship for Comedy in Film. Subsequent drafts of the script made it to the semi-finals of the 2018 Slamdance Screenplay competition and the 2020 Showtime Tony Cox Screenplay Competition, respectively. Another feature script, Damsels, a queer fairytale, was a shortlisted finalist in Screencraft’s 2020 Animation Screenplay Competition.
They are currently developing The Terrible Child feature with the support from the Canada Council for the Arts Explore and Create grant, awarded in 2022. Bec’s directorial debut was a short “calling card” for the film shot in 2021 with the support of OPC Films in Toronto. Last year they were hired to pen a short PSA for Casey House in Toronto called OTHERS, emphasizing the dangers of social stigma related to HIV/AIDS.
Bec's most recent short Are You Scared To Be Yourself Because You Think That You Might Fail? enjoyed it's world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (2024) where it won the Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Film.
Bec’s filmmaking focuses on coming-of-age through queerness.
