Anmol Virasat (Jainism in Tamil Nadu)
Jainism, one of the world’s oldest dharmic tradition (religion), has significantly influenced its followers and society with its core principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekant (multiplicity of perspectives), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness). Guided by the teachings of the 24 Tirthankaras, Jains promote ethical living, compassion, tolerance and sustainability.
In Tamil Nadu, Jains have preserved their heritage while integrating into Tamil l culture. Historic patronage from Pallava, Chola, and Pandya dynasties led to the creation of architectural marvels like Sittanavasal, Kazhugumalai, and Mangulam etc, showcasing Jain art, philosophy, and inscriptions.
Organizations like the Rajasthan Youth Association and Rajasthan Cosmo Club run food banks, medi-banks and actively contribute to society through humanitarian efforts such as food, medical, educational, and protective charities.
Vibrant centers like Chennai's Juna Mandir and Mel Sithamur Math foster religious and cultural activities, reflecting their enduring commitment to peace, art, and spirituality. Their contributions continue to enrich Tamil Nadu’s socio-cultural and spiritual fabric.
The Jain community’s enduring commitment to peace, non-violence, and ethical living exemplifies the transformative impact of their principles on Tamil Nadu’s society and culture. Their contributions to spirituality, art, education, and humanitarianism continue to enrich the region’s heritage.

Ms. Usha Abhayakumar, the Secretary of Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women, is a passionate advocate for women's education. With a vision to empower both students and faculty, she consistently encourages academic excellence, research, and creative production that reflects India’s rich culture and traditions. Her commitment to meaningful storytelling is evident in her production of the award-winning documentary B. B. Lal – Doyen of Indian Archaeology, directed by Dr. Ramadevi Sekhar and Mr. Ebenezer Annadoss. This film has been recognized on both national and international platforms.
Dr. Harish L. Metha, a highly respected academician with over five decades of experience in education, has held numerous leadership roles in academia and society. A stalwart in institution-building, he has been instrumental in fostering research and cultural exploration through education.
Together, Ms. Usha Abhayakumar and Dr. Harish L. Metha co-directed the documentary film Anmol Virasat – Jainism in Tamil Nadu. This collaboration brought together the collective strengths of academic leadership and cultural dedication, steering a passionate team of faculty and students to bring this project to life.
Anmol Virasat is a tribute to the enduring legacy of Jainism in Tamil Nadu — a spiritual and cultural journey that celebrates its timeless influence across the region. Initiated and co-directed by Ms. Usha Abhayakumar and Dr. Harish L. Metha, the film was envisioned not just as a documentary but as an educational expedition. With a strong emphasis on experiential learning, students and faculty were given the rare opportunity to travel extensively across Tamil Nadu — documenting Jain monuments, cave shelters, ancient temples, landscapes, bhavans, goshala, and more.
The film is a sincere effort to bring visibility to the lesser-known yet profound presence of Jain heritage in Tamil Nadu narrated through its philosophical journey. It has been officially certified with a ‘U’ certificate by the CBFC and stands as a proud offering to the Jain community and heritage lovers. Through Anmol Virasat, we aim to inspire future generations to explore, preserve, and respect the rich spiritual and architectural legacy of Jainism in Tamil Nadu.
