Hello there, I'm Patrick Hoffman! Since a child, I have always been interested in being behind the camera. In 2019, I was able to do just that!
I am an LGBTQ+ Alaskan Native from the Athabascan tribe. I was born in Anchorage, AK but moved to Washington in 2017 to pursue and education in Media Arts & Studies (AKA, video production). My Kino eye tends to focus on LGBTQ+ and indigenous social issues. An important program I took at The Evergreen State College was called Mediaworks. This program helped me identify my artistic style as well as my moral guidelines to film production. We were assigned a reading by Russel Sharman who discussed concepts from George Gerber. The main message was that if a culture has no visual or audio representation in media it will lead to cultural deletion. This idea resonated with me and influenced me to put the concept into action. I did that by putting my scope on the LGBTQ+ community with hopes of finding positive and negative messages. In spring 2021 we were assigned the task of creating a ten-minute short film with little restrictions on what topic we could approach. With the inspiration from Marlon Riggs, I wanted to share some of my personal experiences. The topic I chose was based on the LGBTQ+ romantic experience with a hard focus on accurate representation. In my pre-production process, I realized that the message I was going for was bigger than just myself. This caused me to outsource people to interview from the LGBTQ+ community. I was able to interview four LGBTQ+ members about some of their first romantic experiences. There were stories of love and manipulation. My primary goal was to show that the LGBTQ+ community has similar experiences to the heterosexual community. This tied into my primary goal of representing the LGBTQ+ community in a realistic way because relationships are not as simple as they appear to me in mainstream media.
