Director Statement

When I first began thinking about this project, I knew I wanted to convey an old-school, wholesome, fun love tale. So, when I started writing and designing these characters, I went with a 90s concept of "black sitcoms."

I aimed to capture the spirit of southern black culture through its food, fashion, sports, and music to create a setting where families could gather around the TV to watch an everyday couple's journey to true love and honor.

Besides this, one of my goals was to make the viewer feel as if Marcus and Ava are a couple that they would like to be friends with because of their warm southern hospitality and the fact that the struggles they face as a couple and individually are relatable.

When we first began shooting, I had to figure out how to make Washington state resemble Texas. We filmed in three separate Washington locations, supplemented with B-roll and music, and were successful in our mission.
