Oscar Alvarez entered the film industry in 2004 when he earned the opportunity to work with Oscar-nominated writer/director David O. Russell (Amsterdam, Joy, American Hustle) on the Iraqi War documentary Soldiers Pay, serving as Production Manager. In this role, Alvarez oversaw the day-to-day operations of Russell’s production company, Kanzeon.
He remained with Kanzeon until 2008, when he transitioned to producing independent projects, beginning with the short film Child Reduction Act.
In 2011, Alvarez partnered with filmmaker Kayvon Derak-Shanian to produce the award-winning feature documentary Empty Hand: The Real Karate Kids, hailed by Black Belt Magazine as “A MUST SEE…the first real Karate movie in years.” The following year, Alvarez teamed with production designer/producer Todd Jeffery (Tulsa King) on the cerebral comedy short The Wolf, starring Zach Cregger (Weapons) and Caitriona Balfe (Outlander), directed by Dustin Thomas Cartmill.
Alvarez reunited with Derak-Shanian in 2013 to produce his second feature documentary, The Real Miyagi, featuring Fumio Demura, Dolph Lundgren, and Steven Seagal. In 2015, Alvarez secured a worldwide distribution deal with Netflix, where the film streamed in more than 40 countries for three years.
Most recently, Alvarez produced More Than Miyagi (2021), again alongside Derak-Shanian. The film features Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Martin Kove, Esai Morales, Tommy Chong, and Henry Winkler in a heartfelt tribute to beloved actor Pat Morita. Released worldwide to massive critical and audience acclaim, the documentary holds a rare 100% rating on both the Tomatometer and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In 2015, Alvarez and Derak-Shanian formalized their partnership by launching LOVE PROJECT FILMS, in association with Alvarez’ production company ADIOS PERRO. He is currently in post-production on his directorial debut, ALONE - a film starring Jesse Garcia and his daughter, actress Izabella Alvarez.
Storytelling is more than my passion—it’s my purpose. As a proud Angeleno and a first-generation Latino born to immigrant parents, I have seen firsthand the power of representation and the consequences of its absence. Too often, Latino narratives in mainstream media are reduced to stereotypes, failing to reflect the depth, resilience, and diversity of our communities. My mission as a filmmaker is to change that.
Through LOVE PROJECT FILMS and ADIOS PERRO, we are committed to telling stories that promote diversity, social justice, and underrepresented voices. We strive to give a platform to individuals and communities whose stories have been ignored or misrepresented, raising awareness, fostering empathy, and inspiring meaningful change—especially within Latino communities.
The ALONE Universe is deeply personal to me—not only as a filmmaker but as a father. Directing my daughter, Izabella Alvarez, alongside the immensely talented Jesse Garcia, has reinforced my belief in the transformative power of cinema. At its core, filmmaking is about truth—about capturing our struggles, triumphs, and humanity in a way that connects us all.
I am honored to bring this vision to life and to continue creating stories that challenge, inspire, and celebrate the richness of our culture.
