Director Statement

When my friend Peri came to me with the idea of creating a short film revolving around the idea of the negative aspects of social media, I clicked with it immediately due to my own reservations regarding social media. After doing some research, I discovered that there are now some studies coming out about the effects of the overconsumption of social media, especially in young girls, that caused an increase in anxiety and depression from comparing themselves to these picture-perfect models and celebrities.

I know that my own experiences with social media and comparing myself to friends, filmmakers, and others who seem to have it all together, have left me feeling lost and like I’ll never have that. It almost feels like I’m drowning in a sea of people better at life than me even when I know that the things that are posted online are often edited, cropped, filtered and composed in a way that feels real, but couldn’t be further from what reality truly is when they hit upload. And that’s where the idea sparked, to show how social media can actually drown someone in those feelings and emotions and how that line of what’s real online and real in real life, can easily be blurred and difficult to navigate.
