Alma

We follow Violet, a young Latina, through a moment during a family get together, where she navigates the horrors of social, gender, and racial pressures. Her attempts to hide and cope with it all has manifested in a very dark and unhealthy way. Her Alma (Spanish for soul) appears as a reminder of the internal battles she's suppressing.

Director Biography - Iris Reyes

Iris Reyes is a Puerto Rican Filmmaker, also known by her peers as Cookie. She was born in Manhattan, NY but lived in Brooklyn with her family before moving to New Jersey where she grew up. She always had a love for film and Acting and attended Acting classes as a child and teen. She later attended Montclair State University, in Upper Montclair, NJ, with the hopes of becoming a Lawyer. She enrolled in Theater classes while in college and excelled in her Literature courses. With the encouragement from one of her English Literature Professors, she decided to take Writing more seriously. Soon after, she had to abruptly leave college, in order to work full time. Over the years, she kept coming back to her writing and would periodically enter writing competitions for short stories and screenwriting. She noticed the best feedback she continued to receive was regarding her screenplays and this helped to fuel her further.

She is now the Director of The Tampa Bay Latin International Film Festival, member of the Dunedin International Film Festival’s Board of Directors and a member of The Women in Film and Television, Tampa Branch. She's a Producer and Screenwriter but began her career in the Arts as an Actress before deciding to work behind the camera as a Script Supervisor. She's known by her peers as one of the hardest working people on set and attained fast growth by simultaneously learning multiple key crew roles. She works as a Script Supervisor, 1st & 2nd Assistant Director, Unit Production Manager, Location Manager, and as a Line Producer. She's worked on short films and feature films, in all genres, on commercials and occasionally works as a Camera Operator for music and sporting events. Iris recently started her own production company, iReyes Films, LLC, Produced and Directed her own short Horror Film and is in the process of Producing and Directing more of her own projects.

Director Statement

We filmed this quickly, after deciding to turn a 15 second advertisement for the Latin Arts Festival and TBLIFF, into a 9+min short film, with dialogue. Our theme for this years Latin Arts festival, was "Identity", so I kept this in mind when writing the script. I'm super proud of the work my team produced in less than 2 days. Looking forward to working on more projects. I hope you enjoy it. This is my first film.
