Director Biography - Joe Foster

I'm a filmmaker based in Nottingham, UK. I previously worked in the film/TV industry in London as crew, now aspiring to write and tell the stories I want to tell.

Director Statement

This is my first film project as a writer/director and editor.

Although the story is fictional, it is inspired by the investigative work of the British broadcast journalist Marianna Spring - the BBC's first disinformation specialist and social media correspondent.

I was inspired to write the story after watching the BBC Panorama documentary "Disaster Deniers: Hunting the Trolls". It explores the real abuse that victims of disasters have endured. They are accused of lying and of being "crisis actors", when in reality they have suffered the death of loved ones and life-changing injuries.

Alleged acts as a proof of concept for an anthology series - telling similar stories of how disinformation can be damaging for society, and how people can be disconnected from the real world, and harm those around them - whether directly or indirectly (conspiracy theorists, Flat Earthers, TikTok sleuths, keyboard warriors, revenge porn distributers, etc). Through the course of each story the featured characters have a rude awakening, where reality collides with their warped perspective on the world around them.

Think Black Mirror crossed with Jimmy McGovern's Accused - which has recently been remade in the US for Paramount +.

This project has been crafted with skill and passion by local filmmakers based in Nottingham, in the East Midlands, UK.
