Wannabe: All Washed Up
It's like THE DISASTER ARTIST without the Artist. Steve (Craig Young, Mank, NCIS: Los Angeles) is a British washed-up pop star who gets another chance of success, but his five minutes of fame comes at a price. In the day and age of social media, once something is captured on film, it can take on a different life and live forever. Poor Steve is dogged by an obsessed Documentarian who catches his every un-woke mistake. Also stars Adam Huss (Power).

Richard was born in Panama City, the Republic of Panama. He grew up on the East Coast and attended Georgia State University in Atlanta Georgia. He received a BFA in photography with a minor in creative writing. Although his focus was photography Richard was always obsessed with movies and filmmaking. His graduating thesis project was a feature film he directed called “Point and Shoot”.
After graduating he moved to Los Angeles to further his film ambitions. He has worked as a cinematographer and director, working for various outlets over the years including Nat Geo, Rolling Stone, Variety, and Disney. Richard produced his second feature film “Wannabe” which starred Craig Young and Adam Huss. It was further developed as a TV show with Marta Kauffman of “Friends, Grace and Frankie” as Show Runner. The film was purchased by Warner Brothers Television. He collaborated again with Craig Young and created another television pilot “Andy and Chaz” which was produced by Tony Jonas of WB TV Studios.
I guess I should start off by saying I'm Latin. not that I expect it to open doors or for festival directors to pick my film because I check a box -I hope that's not the case and my movie stands up and deserves a slot all on its own!
During the covid-19 pandemic, I was furloughed from work, it was a tough time for me and a lot of my fellow creatives. I have been toying around the idea about how funny it might be to make a sequel to a film that nobody has ever seen. Wannabe 1 does actually exist, but it's one of those films that got stuck on the shelf at a studio, eventually living for a short while on Amazon. Christopher Guest has always been a huge inspiration of mine and like him, I had this stable of really good fucking actors from 'The Groundlings' that I have worked with a lot on smaller projects. The bittersweet Covid years allowed me to get all of these busy actors in a room at the same time (COVID SAFE - Of course) and create something special. I wanted to say something about the canceled culture we find ourselves in today, what is off-limits, with comedy? who far can I push the envelope in this new woke world - would it be considered tasteless, vulgar, insensitive? perhaps it could be this conversation starter - I wanted something that could offend half of the people and entertain some of the others and I think I've done that here. Craig Young (Steve) is my writing partner and we've been chipping away in this industry for over 20 years - We met when I cast him in this crazy short film called Exhibit A and we've worked together ever since. He and I sat for hours coming up with these ludicrous scenarios we could put our main character in and the great thing about Craig is, he's not afraid to try anything, he'd dress up in a squirrel suit and run up and down Hollywood Blvd if I asked him to and if you watch the film, he does.
Growing up in Panama then later in the American South, I didn't get much help in the Film industry, no famous father to give me a helping hand up, no famous friends to bring me up with them -just a Latino kid with a camera and a dream!
