Jesse Swenson is a Brooklyn-based writer, musician and filmmaker who started out as an actor. His Broadway credits include 'Spring Awakening' and 'The Addams Family,' and he's perhaps best known for portraying Asher Hornsby, the villainous dog-walker from Gossip Girl, Season 1.
'Alan at Night' is his first feature as a director.
Jesse is a proponent of all things spooky, a proficient skier and an alumnus of NYU's Grad Film Program. He's currently developing his sophomore horror film, 'Myra Nightshade's Greatest Hits.' (Launch Pad Top 50, New Blood Quarterfinalist.)
Of all the relationship models human beings routinely opt into, the “roommates” arrangement fascinates me most.
On the plus side, having a roommate (or several) can help mitigate the ever-rising cost of housing, especially in dense cities where rent is, to use a technical term, “onerous as fuck.” Other potential benefits of cohabitation include: friendships of convenience, collaborators for tedious household chores and, in some cases, roommates even come with useful assets - like a sick TV or an espresso machine.
On the downside, you have to live with other people. And, as we all know from skimming the “No Exit” Wikipedia page ahead of the AP Lit final in high school, “Hell is other people.” My experiences sharing leases have borne this out decidedly. Here are some highlights:
- One roommate pinned me against a wall for borrowing his scissors without asking.
- Another routinely mixed booze with Ambien and would house my groceries during his ensuing fugue states.
- Still another once ran his buttplug through our communal dishwasher. (Which, like… I know it’s sterile but come on, dude!)
All this to say, the risk one incurs when sharing a living space is legit terrifying and, to my mind, fertile ground for a spooky movie. That was the genesis for ‘Alan at Night.’
So kick back, crack open a big ol’ jar of mayonnaise* and enjoy the film.
