Ryan Freeston is a filmmaker and former British Army Staff Sergeant who brings a practical, no-nonsense approach to his work behind the camera. He served in the Army for 18 and a half years, taking on a range of leadership roles including Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant, Medical Liaison Officer for the Armed Forces in East Africa, and Camp Sergeant Major in Kenya. He also acted in the role of Warrant Officer, gaining valuable experience in leadership, organisation, and working under pressure.
In 2020, Ryan completed a degree in Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care. After being diagnosed with PTSD, he left the Army in 2024. He initially began training as a counsellor, hoping to support others going through similar challenges. While that path was worthwhile, he realised he had a better way to reach people—through film.
Ryan went on to start his own production company, focusing on live multi-camera setups. He regularly directs and operates these productions, handling both the creative and technical sides. His work includes roles such as video operator on The Vice documentary Spartan Fight Club, and ongoing production work with FCC, whose events are broadcast live on UFC Fight Pass.
With a focus on honest, straightforward storytelling, Ryan is particularly interested in topics around mental health and recovery. His aim is to help raise awareness and offer something relatable to people who may be struggling. For him, filmmaking isn’t just a job—it’s a way to make a difference, however small.
Making films is a passion and privilege, I want to use my skills and passion to help spread awareness of mental health, and hopefully help people on a global scale.
