Cross the Yangtze River

For Nanking (Jiangsu, China), the Yangtze River flows through the city, nurturing the breath and life on both sides for billions of years, connecting the nature and culture of "Jiangxi" (west of the river) and "Jiangdong" (east of the river). As early as the Qing Dynasty in the last century, Nanking established two major transportation hubs, "Pukou Wharf" and "Zhongshan Wharf," with ferries crossing the Yangtze River, allowing people from all walks of life on both sides to rub shoulders and blend. With the ebb and flow of tides, Nanking's century-old ferry has undergone prosperity, decline, suspension, and reconstruction.

Today, "Pukou Wharf" and "Zhongshan Wharf" have regained their social and cultural value as part of the Yangtze River ferry. The pier ferry is not just a mode of transportation, it also carries the history of modern Nanking. People are the center, and the river is the thread, dividing time, space, economy, and society. The bustling Nanjingbei Railway Station near Pukou Wharf has already stopped operating, and now the surrounding area is being demolished and rebuilt into a tourism and cultural scenic spot, with Pukou Wharf shifting from transportation to tourism development.

With economic development, the differences between Jiangdong and Jiangxi seem to be diminishing, but they are silently widening in another corner. We hope that the documentary "Cross the Yangtze River" can leave behind a snapshot of the Yangtze River piers and the people of Nanking in the 2020s of the 21st century. Cross the Yangtze River, observing the past and the present.
