About German Women

Ingolstadt 1929: In search of the "German Woman", the young author Marieluise Fleißer creates her emancipated alter ego in her novel character Frieda Geier, which knows how to assert herself in the business world. Fleißer herself, however, suffers from the female image of her time, the influence of her fiancé Draws-Tychsen and her own self-doubts, until the one and only Frieda Geier suddenly shows up on her doorstep and turns her life upside down.

Director Biography - Kevin Schmutzler, Tobias Schmutzler

Directing films together since they were kids had them grow into a perfectly coordinated team – despite the occasional argument between brothers now and then. The Munich based directors-duo has established themselves in the past years as story-driven filmmakers. In 2015, when they had just started their master programs at university the brothers founded their own production company FilmCrew to pursue their vision of creating high quality entertainment that comes with a social purpose.
During their time at university, Kevin and Toby have shot a mid-length feature in rural India, a documentary on street kids in D.R. Congo as well as several award-winning shorts. In 2018 the brothers finally released their feature debut ROBIN, a social impact movie was nominated at over 40 international festivals in the past year and is now sold worldwide by L.A. based Electric Entertainment.

Director Statement

Despite the quota of women and Girls-Days, equal rights for women in the 21st century have not yet been fully achieved in Germany - not to mention other cultures. Politically and economically, things are going in the right direction, the real imbalance is in the head. But overall, things are looking up for women and girls in this country. Even our too rigid role models of man and woman seem to be changing, ponderous but unstoppable. The positive development towards equal rights becomes particularly clear when we consider a look back:
Marieluise Fleißer was born into a different world, with a different perspective. Amazing is her lifelong struggle for emancipation, which is reflected in the strong female characters of her stories - in complete contrast to her personal fate in relation to the a man's world. Her literary message is in times of #metoo and superficiality mania in social media are still relevant to hold up a mirror to society. A speaking mirror that questions motivations and circumstances. Just a mirror image like Frieda Geier in "About German Women".
