FAYELE, a poor teacher at a community primary school is deeply in love with ABEKE, the daughter of a rich Cocoa merchant who embarrasses Fayele, the fiance, and wouldn't want him anywhere near his daughter. The embarrassment heaped on Fayele, causes him to question his father's faith and religion as to why he is poor and unable to secure a good job. Fayele's father acts by seeking spiritual help for his son's success, but instead, is given a message that his son should not marry at the moment. Something that is immediately in the offin after Abeke turns a problem for her father over his objection to her chosen man.
While all seems to be going well after Abeke's father agrees to the union, Ayinde, younger brother to Abeke's father whose earlier contact with Fayele over his thieving son, has sparked abuses and anger, works to stop the relationship and marriage, but he is unsuccessful until the death of Abeke's father. Once Abeke's father is out of the way, Ayinde connives with ADEROJU, a rich but proud timber merchant who has always shown interest in Abeke. They set Fayele up with a female friend, MOJOYIN, who has been obsessed with him for a long time.
Fayele is caught in bed with Mojoyin, and Abeke is devastated. Ayinde claims justification for his objection to the marriage in the first place, then personally sees to the removal of Abeke's belongings from Fayele's house. While Fayele tries to resolve the problem, Aderoju gets closer and friendlier with Abeke who now thinks Aderoju might be a better man.
Aderoju confronts Mojoyin for her action, and she expresses remorse and regret. While she contemplates to confess her deed, she is kidnapped to be killed, but escapes. Sensing Aderoju might gain some leverage, he is attacked and left for dead. Abeke is at the point of deciding if to give Aderoju a chance when a message reaches her of Fayele's incident, and as she rushes to the hospital, she is involved in an accident.
A gossip who thinks Abeke is dead goes to rant at Aderoju's ward, ignorantly claiming Abeke is dead. A subconscious Aderoju hears that and is devastated. He discharges himself from hospital and poisons himself. When news reaches Abeke of the gossip and Fayele's departure from hospital, she is agitated and worried. She remembers a promise once made that should anything happen to her, he would not wait a second to share the experience. She rushes to Fayele's house butis too late when she finally finds him. Fayele is dead.
Mojoyin returns to confess her role in the drama that set Fayele up, asserting she is manipulated by Ayinde and Aderoju who also have her kidnapped for murder. She begs for forgiveness, while Abeke mourns her fate.
