Born and brought up in a tiny village of northern part of Sri lanka, he was arrested by the armed forces in 1984 while he was doing his advanced level studies, at the age of 17 .
As the arms struggle of Tamil youths was intensifying demanding a separate state, random arrests and intimidation of Tamils became a daily routine for the ruling Singhala regime .

after almost three years of detention in various army camps and prisons without trial, he was then released. Following the release, he was constantly harassed by the intelligent forces and on 13th December 1986 he fled the country to United Kingdom and was accepted as a refugee.

In the UK, he completed his studies in accountancy and did his masters in film studies. His first debut film was Mann ( Soil) was made in 2005.

He is married with two daughters one of whom acted in a main role in this film.
