A Woman Resurrected from the Sea
Kadal Uyirppu (A woman resurrected from the sea) is a poignant documentary that weaves together documentary realism and fictional storytelling. The movie is based on K. P. Ramanunni’s novel Sufi Paranja Kadha (The Story Told by Sufi). The novel is set against the socio-religious backdrop of Ponnani, a coastal fishing village in Kerala. The story revolves around Karthi, a Nair girl who fell in love with a Muslim man named Mamutti, got married to him, and converted to Islam. But after her conversion, the girl had a desire to see Goddess Machilamma (a local deity) and her husband built a small temple near his Muslim household. Several communal conflicts arose due to this incident. Gradually, Mamutti lost interest in Karthi. They grew distant, and in the end, Karthi walked into the sea and transformed into a Beebi, a local saintly figure worshipped by the Hindus and the Muslims alike. The film captures the deep emotional and spiritual conflicts of Karthi and her transformation into a holy self. The movie transitions seamlessly between real interviews and dramatized scenes from the novel, incorporating different genres of music, including Khayal, Thumri, and devotional songs.

In contemporary India, where religious conflicts are on the rise, I was inspired to make this film by the realization that a novel written 35 years ago still holds such powerful relevance today.
