Director Biography - Daniela Di Salvo

Daniela Di Salvo's love for films was nurtured from an early age by her father. Childhood memories of weekend trips to the local video store, often selecting their favourite "Mary Poppins" for repeated viewings, laid the foundation for her future career. This passion eventually led her to pursue filmmaking, focusing on writing and directing.

Now a Toronto-based independent filmmaker, Daniela's work has garnered international recognition. Her recent short documentary, "Painting the Boogeyman," clinched the Best Documentary Short award at the Berlin International Art Film Festival. In 2022, her short film "Welcome Home" swept multiple categories at the Independent Shorts Awards in Los Angeles, winning Best Mobile Short and Best Micro Film, while also earning Daniela a nomination for Best Director (Female). The film's success continued at Indie Short Fest, where it won Best Sci-Fi Short and Daniela took home the Best Director (Female) award.

Daniela's comedic short, "It's Desmond," has also made waves, screening at over 35 film festivals worldwide. Her work is inspired by the dichotomy of light and dark in the world around us, exploring both the beauty and the ugliness, the darkness and the sweetness of life. This unique perspective continues to shape her distinctive voice in independent cinema.

Director Statement

Directing "A Vegan Love Story" presented an exciting opportunity to delve into the realm of comedy while simultaneously exploring the nuances of genre filmmaking. As I immersed myself in the script, I discovered underlying currents of darkness that begged to be explored. This revelation inspired me to weave subtle elements of horror into the narrative fabric, creating a unique interplay between laughter and unease.

I aimed to cultivate an atmosphere of uncertainty that simmers beneath the surface humour, challenging the audience's expectations and keeping them slightly off-balance.

By juxtaposing moments of levity with undercurrents of discomfort, I sought to create a viewing experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Ultimately, I hope that audiences will not only find joy and laughter in the film but also embrace its inherent absurdity, leaving them with a memorable and unconventional cinematic experience.
