ANSHEL

ANSHEL is a captivating historical drama series about the unbelievable life story of a visionary who never stops. The story begins in Romania, 1986. Anshel (78) is taking a trip to his homeland with his granddaughter Nurit (22), his complete opposite. During flashbacks, we witness the turbulent true story of an immigrant with a dream. A man who was born into a poor Hasidic family of goat shepherds in a Romanian village. After losing his mother, Anshel (19) decides to take destiny into his own hands and explore the diamond world, through his relatives’ connections.
Creatively, he manages to obtain a train ticket to Antwerp, Belgium. Upon his arrival to Cousin Meir’s house, Anshel works tirelessly for the next ten years to become a very successful diamantaire. As a passionate Zionist, he sets himself a goal to establish a diamond industry in the Land of Israel.

Throughout the series, we uncover many sides to his personality. Alongside the drive for a professional success, Anshel becomes a flawed man who gives into his desires and doesn’t hesitate to break up his marriage (twice) and even maintains contact with a Romanian mistress during his third marriage. However, he does have close yet complex ties with his five children, and 16 grandchildren. The story is steeped in Jewish humor,
celebrations, and traditions.
