At its core, this story highlights the fight to preserve a long-standing housing facility for elderly residents—a place that holds decades of memories and connections for its people.

Central to this story is the legacy of Roy Thompson, a local who donated the land for the facility in 1973. His generosity was a testament to the values of compassion and care for the community’s most vulnerable. Roy’s dream was to create a sanctuary where elderly residents could live with dignity, surrounded by a supportive neighborhood.

In New Zealand today, the challenges faced by our elderly are too often overlooked. Access to safe, affordable housing, the fear of displacement, and the loss of independence are issues that affect not just individuals, but entire communities. Through this film, we aim to shine a light on these struggles while celebrating the power of collective action and the enduring bonds of community.

Blockhouse Bay serves as more than just a setting—it’s a character in itself. The neighborhood’s rich history, its diverse voices, and its unyielding spirit remind us that the fight for dignity and respect, especially for our elderly, is one we must all take part in. This is a story about standing together, speaking out, and valuing the people who built the foundations of our society.
