Serra Soyupak is a 27-year-old Turkish filmmaker whose work bridges both the Eastern and Western traditions. A graduate of the University of Arts London, Serra is deeply fascinated by the intersection of modernity and heritage. She aims to bring a distinctive visual style to her films, focusing on fashion as a narrative tool.
Her work centers around themes of women’s empowerment, using sports, culture, and fashion to tell stories that challenge norms and inspire change. Through her latest film, Amazigh, Serra explores identity, cultural fusion, and the strength of women across diverse social and historical contexts, further establishing her voice as a filmmaker dedicated to pushing boundaries and celebrating the resilience of women.
“Amazigh” is a film deeply rooted in my fascination with the intersection of tradition and modernity. Coming from a culture that blends both Eastern and Western influences, I’ve always been drawn to stories that reflect the tension, beauty, and complexity of this mix. Through Amazigh, I wanted to explore the strength of women, not only as individuals but as bearers of cultural heritage. Maryam El Gardoum, a proud Amazigh woman who faced social pressures while pursuing her passion for surfing, served as my real-life inspiration for this story.
The film reflects my desire to show women’s resilience in the face of societal and historical challenges, while also celebrating their role in shaping and preserving identity. By focusing on fashion, sports, and culture as storytelling devices, I aim to create a visual language that highlights both the struggle and the empowerment of women. The landscapes, the traditions, and the fusion of old and new are integral to the narrative, as they mirror the inner journey of the character.
Through this film, I hope to challenge the audience to think about how we navigate our identities in a world that constantly shifts between honoring the past and embracing the future. Ultimately, I want viewers to leave with a deeper understanding of the universality of strength, resilience, and the power of cultural roots in shaping who we are.
