Director Biography - Erin Lau

Just as her family served Hawaiʻi through their talents, Native Hawaiian filmmaker Erin Lau wanted to elevate her community through film. Erin was selected as a Sundance Native Lab fellow for her Chapman University MFA thesis, The Moon and the Night. The award-winning film went on to screen in over 30 festivals, including being short-listed for the 2018 Student BAFTA awards and licensed by the Criterion Channel. Since graduation, Erin has signed with the United Talent Agency (UTA) and continued her growth through fellowships with the Sundance Indigenous Institute, Film Independent’s Project Involve, Unlock Her Potential, North Point Institute, and Powderkeg’s Break The Room. Over the past three years, she has worked as a Senior Producer-Director for Jubilee Media, where her videos accumulated over 130 million views. Director Statement

Our film continues the important work of broadening what an Asian and Asian American experience looks like by showcasing a joyful queer love story. We are all at different stages of reckoning with the complexities of our identities as Asians and Asian Americans. We are a community that has struggled with a forgotten history of exclusion, erasure, invisibility, and the loss of individuality. We have taught ourselves to shrink, to soldier on, to suppress our tears and diminish our pain, conditioned by a false narrative of insignificance. The pandemic made us newly visible – but as targets of intensified hate and xenophobia. It’s in these times of great suffering and hate that it becomes even more vital to uplift and celebrate our art, our joy, and our love. In closing, after a year of great difficulty, our team hopes this film provides you with both comfort and warmth.

Thank you.
