Director Biography - Benjamin Adnams

Benjamin is the 2024 winner of the First Flights Short Film Fund Award in partnership with Theta Drop and Goldfinch Entertainment.

He studied Filmmaking at NFTS, was part of the Soho Theatre Writers’ Lab and was an original member of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Creative Midlands Network.

In film, he has made numerous short narrative films including a commission of 5 award winning films for the UK FCDO. He is currently a Semi-Finalist in the Outstanding Screenplays short script competition.

In Theatre, he has written and directed multiple times at the Royal Court, Wilton’s Music Hall and The Other Palace. Was supported by Wilton’s Music Hall in developing a play, and recieved Arts Council funding to develop a project set in Stoke-On-Trent, supported by the New Vic Theatre, with help from RSC. He was mentored by Vicky Featherstone, Artisic Director of the Royal Court.

Benjamin’s focus is to use character and story to explore societal and cultural issues. Rather than telling an audience what to think, he wants to present the consequences of these issues, through drama and satire, and let any audience decide for themselves.

Director Statement

ALIENATED is an Absurd SCI-FI Comedy Short about the first person to be deported from earth. It’s about bureaucracy, empathy and what happens when someone slips through the cracks of the system. Think: ‘if Soviet’s made Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’.

Made on a budget of a mere £3.5k (the majority of which went into paying everyone above union rates… to show that it CAN be done!)

It is co-written by (BAFTA Nominated) Jac Clinch and Aruhan Galieva. Directed by (First Flights Winner) Benjamin Adnams and produced by (First Flights Winner) Aruhan Galieva. It stars Yerden Telemissov (Slow Horses on Apple+).

This ambitious film is a dual language production (English and Russian) which was shot both in the UK and Kazakhstan.

It features an entirely original music score by Aruhan Galieva and Andy Kyte. They wrote and recorded every single sound entirely themselves (no samples were used!).

The VFX was created by Jac Clinch and the supporting visual materials were also physically and practically created and filmed, as we are inspired by 1960’s lo fi sci-fi films.
