A Fairy Tale

Once upon a time there was a little girl.
A little girl who was not quite like the others.
A little girl who, one wintry night, armed with a torch and a toy, seeks to save her family from the terrible dragon sleeping in the recesses of their home.

Director Biography - Angeliqa Devi

Angeliqa Devi is an international actress of South Asian origin, born in England, and raised in Canada. She studied acting in Ottawa, holds a PhD in history from London, and currently resides in Rome, from where she pursues her artistic career.

Angeliqa has worked in film, television and theatre, and is pleased to present this experimental short, her directorial debut. The piece, originally a stage monologue, was transformed into a screenplay at the start of the Corona virus pandemic – a dark "lockdown screenplay” that poses the questions: what is home and what is safety? In the absence of a safe home – what is silence? Is silence a form of violence?

Director Statement

Domestic violence impacts untold numbers, including the children who witness it. "Witnessed violence" is widely recognised as traumatic, especially in war settings, yet children who are forced to watch domestic violence and the damage it causes them are rarely brought to light, despite millions being affected. I believe it’s time to speak out.
