Hi,
Thank you for taking the time to read up on and showing interest in our film.
In 2016 i became very curious about the Direct Provision system in Ireland. It's a system that leaves Asylum Seekers in limbo while the state decides whether to grant Asylum or not. Asylum seekers are not allowed to cook for themselves and are nor allowed to work either and they are paid Euro19.20c per week. They can find themselves in this situation for up to 3-4 years before a decision is made. It leaves them in a hopeless limbo while they already have to deal with deep trauma from where they have come from. I wanted to investigate this topic through film. I decided to explore the idea of following a character over a day. 'Afloat' has no dialogue and is musically scored. It has a soundscape and a visual element to it that takes us directly inside the mind of the character and all the way back to what her particular trauma was back in Aleppo Syria. She experiences a break down as a result of PTSD in the middle of the city. She then decides to take a specific journey to the sea to find Closure.
It's a hugely important piece of film. My goal was that, having seen the film, every time somebody meets or observes an Asylum Seeker in the future, that they have a much greater understanding and knowledge of what they are going through on a given day.
