“Áfàméfùnà: The Nwa Boi Story is the first feature-length film on the Igbo apprenticeship system and how it revitalised the community’s economy by allowing successful Igbo men to pass on their knowledge and blessings to apprentices, perpetuating the cycle of wealth creation.

The film, directed by Kayode Kasum, features a remarkable cast that includes Kanayo O. Kanayo, Stan Nze, Alexx Ekubo, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, Segun Arinze, with appearances from Jide Kene Achufusi, and Noble Igwe. Omobayowa Alabi produced the film, which was executive produced by Lawumi Fajemirokun and Kenechukwu Egbue.

Director Biography - Kayode Kasum

Kayode Kasum is a visionary Director and Producer who believes in the power of authenticity. His unique style and cinematography are deeply rooted in the emotions of his characters and the core elements of each story he tells. With a passion for cultural preservation, Kayode’s films often reflect the richness of African traditions, bridging the gap between generations in Africa and the Diaspora.

In 2024, Kayode achieved a monumental milestone with his film AFAMEFUNA, which became the most-watched film on Netflix Nigeria that year. The film garnered critical acclaim, won numerous awards, and was recently screened at the prestigious Black Movie Film Festival in Geneva. This achievement further solidified his position as one of Nigeria’s most influential filmmakers.

Kayode’s directorial prowess was also showcased in the Netflix original series Far From Home, a successful TV hit that captivated audiences worldwide. Additionally, he produced and directed Ajosepo, which became the third highest-grossing film at the Nigerian box office in 2024, contributing to his cumulative box office sales of nearly ₦1.5 billion—a testament to his commercial and artistic success.

Kayode’s filmography is a testament to his versatility and dedication to storytelling. He has directed over 10,860+ minutes of content for MNET’s telenovela series, including Unbroken and Riona. His other directorial works include Sugar Rush, This Lady Called Life, Kambili - The Whole 30 Yards, Castle and Castle S2, Soole, MTV Shuga S5, and Nollywood Musical Obara’M.

In 2021, Kayode made history by producing and directing Nigeria’s first travel film, Soole, which he describes as one of the most challenging projects of his career. Filmed entirely in a bus traveling from Lagos to Enugu and back, the production faced numerous obstacles, including security concerns and infrastructural challenges. Despite these hurdles, Soole became one of the highest-grossing films of 2021, further cementing Kayode’s reputation as a resilient and innovative filmmaker.

That same year, four of his films ranked among the top 10 most-streamed Nigerian films on Netflix, a feat achieved largely through his production company, FilmTribe Media. Beyond film, Kayode has directed impactful projects, including a two-part documentary series for the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), music videos, TV series, and campaigns for global brands such as Forbes, Tecno, Ndani TV, DHL, Manchester United, Best Ever Food Review Show, Belvedere, ARM Pensions, ART X Lagos, Union Bank Nigeria, African Cable Television (ACTV), Clover Industries Tanzania, and the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism.
