Steven Nye is an American documentary filmmaker from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Upon graduating high school, Steven took a gap year where he was mentored by stunt pilot Michael Wiskus. He gained experience through filming airshows across the U.S. and Canada for social media. His job also included communicating with local tv news stations, newspapers, public relations personnel, sound engineers, pilots, announcers, and directing aerial formation flight cinematography. During his gap year, Steven also worked with the University of Minnesota Men’s Gymnastics team, traveling and filming their NCAA competitions.
His first documentary titled El Paquete Semanal (2017), set in Cuba, won a Silver Medal at the Scholastic National Art & Writing Awards. More recently, his work in progress film, Airshows in Florida, was selected as a winner at the 2020 Miami Film Festival CinemaSlam Competition. Steven is in post-production on a feature length documentary titled Losing Grip, looking at the decline of men’s collegiate gymnastics through the eyes of U.S. Olympic Gymnast, Shane Wiskus.
He is a Part 107 Certified Drone Pilot with eight years of flying experience. He is also working on his Private Pilot’s License and one day hopes to get his helicopter rating to fly major motion picture aerial cinematography.
Steven is a senior film student at The University of Tampa where he is obtaining a BFA in Film and Media Arts.
This film is my senior thesis for the BFA in Film and Media Arts.
