A Cry From Jerusalem
A Cry From Jerusalem
ANONYMOUS MOVING IMAGES FAIR USE
As of 2024, approximately 13,000 Christians live in Jerusalem, making up a small minority (around 4%) of the city's Arab population.
Christians in Jerusalem report a rise in harassment and attacks, including physical assaults (e.g., spitting on clergy), verbal abuse, stone-throwing, and vandalism of churches, monasteries, and cemeteries. These incidents are often linked to a growing sense of religious-nationalist extremism within Israeli society.
Palestinian Christians, including those in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, face significant restrictions on their movement, particularly during religious holidays like Easter. This includes checkpoints and permit systems that limit their ability to access holy sites and participate in celebrations.
Due to these multifaceted challenges, a significant portion of Christian youth in Jerusalem and the wider region are considering leaving, with a survey in early 2025 indicating that nearly half of Christians under 30 in Israel expressed a desire to emigrate, primarily due to escalating discrimination, violence, and the deteriorating socio-political situation.
