Maayanagri (A City of Dreams)
Is vengeance the only path to redemption? Maayangari is a story about two abused young adults who plot to kill the one who inflicted pain on them when they were children. It’s a story about what lengths can people go to find some form of redemption. It starts with Radha, who runs an adult movie theater but simultaneously pushes drugs for his mob boss uncle Dhana. Radha hatches a plan with his moonlighting girlfriend, Krishna, to finally find the freedom they have been chasing for ages. But they are conflicted by unexpected forces that ends with them driving out into the night with just their hopes, dreams and an ambiguous future ahead of them.

Artistic. Bold. Focused. Sourab hails from Hyderabad, India. He had a passion for filmmaking ever since he watched Spielberg’s E.T when he was 8. He wants to tell stories in a way that immediately connects with the audience. As a filmmaker, he feels his goal is to present stories that not only feel real but also intuitive. Sourab wants to work on projects that are distinctive and expressive.
Cinema has provided the greatest filmmakers with the opportunity to express themselves artistically, and intend to follow in their footsteps. I was in awe with cinema and as I grew up, I discovered world cinema which opened up a completely new door to me. I just knew deep down I had to pursue being a filmmaker and tell unique stories that attracted me. For my senior capstone film, I decided to write and direct this project as I have people who are very close to me who had a history of abuse, and I always pondered the question “what if?” What if they had the opportunity to get redemption?
For Maayanagri, I took a twisted route that deals with visceral violence yet there is a sense of redemption in the story but with a hint of ambiguity. I wanted to direct a film with a universal story, but with human themes.
