ODMK'S:
Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Oliver Darrius Merrick King (ODMK) - formally Ken Burns, is proudly from James Smith Cree Nation. From his very early upbringing it was clear Olly was a storyteller. From working on YouTube videos as a teen, blogging and navigating new media to learning how to use industry standard tools and techniques, Olly has done a wide range of media projects. In 2014 Olly took the next steps and went to film program after film program (2014- Nu Meida, 2015- The Adam Beach Film Instit & 2016-NSI’s New Voices programs). Olly is always learning taking on workshops, incubators and labs with the most recent being the Toronto Queer Film Festivals ‘Queer Animation Workshop’ where Olly made his first fully animated short film ‘E P H E M E R A’. From being a student to being a facilitator and mentor Olly has also taught his methods for the WIFC’s Skodoodisden ‘Switch-A-Roo’ and ‘Artist Fusion’. The latter, Olly produced his second animated work, an Indigenous language short titled ‘A Cree Love Story’. Olly’s work has been screened at Gilmli International Film Fest, Way Out Film Fest in Albuquerque, NM and the LA Skins Fest, TQFF, WNDX, ReelPride and Here N’ Queer to name a few.
Currently, Olly is producing a feature with Rhayne Vermette and Charlene Moore titled ‘LEVERS’ which Rhayne is directing. Olly has also starred as a fictional version of himself in the upcoming feature film ‘8th Street Menace’ co-written and directed by Gavin Baird and Jacob Farrell. In addition fo all phases of media production, Olly has also dabbled in the world of curation, selecting, hosting and screening shorts for N.I.M.A.C’s (National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition) movie night.
Being two-spirit and Cree has always been an important part of who he is and his approach to storytelling. Utilizing his innate abilities to teach himself and push the barriers of what is possible Olly continues to move forward in life with curious eyes and a creative mind.
This film was made through prayer, magic, and community. I was honored to be commissioned by the Winnipeg Film Group to make a film for their 50th anniversary. I wanted to celebrate the contributions made from the Indigenous membership through the stories of five artists I respect. ODMK is a longtime collaborator and friend, it was easy to create together and learn. We used the motto F.A.F.O (F*** Around, Find Out) and knowledge acquired from Colour Reversal (BIPOC Prairie film incubator) to experiment with double-triple exposures and direct animation on 16mm film. We hand processed the film with the help of Kristian Church using coffee, laundry detergent, and vitamine C powder. This process brought forward the perspective of various simulations and dimensions. We did this to expose the ways a space can mean many different things based on perception. With revelations of everything existing at the same time, trauma and healing - grief and joy - creation and destruction - illusion and reality; we choose what we want to see. We wanted to celebrate the work Indigenous artists were doing and encourage other Indigenous artists to keep imagining and reflecting that bright light.
