Mia Golden is a Jamaican born, Canadian writer, actor, producer and director whose background as a counsellor and understanding of human behaviour allows her to delve deeply into her subjects. Golden is a producer on a variety of productions ranging from the award-winning feature comedy Jackhammer (eOne Films 2014) to factual series, shorts such as Blood Buddies (2022), The Man on the Bus (2022), Ginny's Enterprise (2023) and the documentary Penny Girl (Empress Avenue Media 2019). She has acted in a number of films including the award winning comedy feature Open For Submissions (2019), the award winning dramatic feature Fragile Seeds (2021) and the upcoming feature thriller Dashcam: Dead Air (2023). In 2022 she directed a short dramatic film, Closing Walls (2022) and most recently the short film which she also wrote, A Beautiful Peace (2023) as well as the short documentary Tied to a Lie (2023) which sheds light on the issue of youth exploitation. She recently completed principal photography on her upcoming documentary feature she directed, Tug of War and is in production for her short documentary, African Rifles.
The subject of peace, both in the global sense as well as individually is always just one thought away from the surface of our psyche. When I wrote this screenplay, the visuals were leaping out to me. I saw the facial expressions, the arch of a finger as it taps, the look of serenity as the music reaches each person.
The film is meant to touch the visual and auditory senses as one of the lead roles is that of the music. Composer Adrian Bent (drummer for musical artist Drake) composed the score for my film.
I am a filmmaker, but I am also a counsellor, and the subject of inner peace is important to me. This story introduces an elderly man, a former Major in the Vietnam war who was an expert in morse code. The morse code tapping of a message he is attempting to get out inexplicably translates to music. This music has a profound effect on his family and guests of his daughter's memorial, triggering individual and international changes. Subtle easter eggs within the film are psychological in nature. The tapping for the morse code is illustrative of tapping in the therapeutic practice of EMDR used to treat trauma victims suffering from PTSD. Music therapy is also a significant tool for those suffering from trauma as well as dementia. My hope for this film is to leave the audience feeling a sense of hope.
