Director Biography - Pedro Moreno

Photographer and Filmmaker Pedro Moreno was born in Mérida, Venezuela, where he attended film school at the Universidad de Los Andes. In 2016 as part of his dissertation essay, he produced a short film using still images about the healthcare crisis in the Andes area. This Chris Marker-like approach has been his North Star ever since. Fleeing the Venezuelan humanitarian crisis in 2018, adapting to his new surroundings as a migrant, he produced "A Backyard for my Grandchildren to Play", about the boarding house that serve as refuge. He focuses on producing intimate, close-to-the-chest type of stories.

Director Statement

This film wasn't planned or premeditated. While in the midst of the storm that can be migrating, I found myself in this place, this house that holds an incredible amount of deep, complex stories. My only reaction to feeling overwhelmed by this situation was to document my surroundings and housemates. What initiated as a photo essay, grew into a short film. What initiated as a documentation of a migrant's surroundings when arriving to his destination, grew into a story about displacement, vulnerability, the paradoxical situation of living in a place void of any home-like essence. And ultimately, what was intended to be a personal note, grew into a universal, specially Venezuelan story, for which my peers can deeply relate to.
