Nadyja von Ebers holds a BA in English and Creative Writing as well as an MA in English from DePaul University and has taught collegiate-level courses in literature, creative writing, theatre, script analysis, rhetoric and composition, etc. at various academic institutions. She is the former Editor-in-Chief of Threshold literary and art magazine (now Crook & Folly) and is a freelance editor and creative consultant. She is thrilled to be making her directorial debut with Bath Salt.
Because I originally came to Bath Salt as script editor, I was deeply familiar with the language and subtext between the two young women whose friendship is depicted. As director, then, my central goal was to make sure that the intimacy and vulnerability in their interaction felt honest and palpable. To me, it is not just a film about cancer, loss, and grief, but an exaltation of authentic human connection and self exploration, informed by both lightheartedness and existential dread. I also aimed to depict the familiar human tension between openness and guardedness in both playful and dark ways. At its core, Bath Salt is about friendship: the fun and reckless friendship of youth, but also friendship built on a mutual confrontation with death. In a piece concerning mortality, I hope to have underscored moments of vitality throughout in order to stress the redemptive aspects of loss and nostalgia.
