Kali

Kali is black, the most powerful and revered goddess in India. She is the goddess of sexuality who bestows Tantra to her followers. According to Hindu mythology, Universe was created when her vagina entered into a divine copulation with the Linga (penis) of Lord Shiva. This divine sex is the power that one achieves through Tantra. Kali is powerful and widely revered because of her power. While this dark-skinned goddess is worshipped all over the world, girls with dark skin are regularly ostracised in India. This documentary looks into the dichotomy of social conditions and delves into Kali and Tantra from the heartland of Bengal, where Tantra and Kali worship continues in full vigour.
In Chandipur village in Bengal, India a young girl burns herself to death because she was being rejected repeatedly in marriage proposals because she was dark complexioned. The father of the girl has decided to build a Kali temple to pay homage to the dead and to protect dark-skinned women in India from suffering. The film starts from here and looks into the unsaid apartheid that exists in India against people who have dark skins. While a dark-skinned person is constantly ostracised, the dichotomy of worshipping Kali, the dark goddess of sexual power and Tantra, is explored from Birbhum, the Tantra heartland of India. The docu-feature gets into the myth of Kali, the practice of Kali-worship, Tantra and divine sexual power while juxtaposing the social conditions faced by dark-skinned women in India.
