ACHTUNG BABY
On the one hand it is a travelogue, on the other hand a cultural exploration. It has a historical context and also the feel of a mystery thriller as we reveal the sensational fact that in this day and age, there are still people so obsessed with Nazi constructs of racial purity that they are willing to travel long distances and have sex with strangers in the belief that his will lead to a ‘pure’ bloodline.
The character, Swang, plays the pivot role around which the whole structure revolves. Swang therefore becomes the central narrator of the tale as well as a major participant in it. Through him we discover his land, his history, his family…and ultimately the shocking fact that he has sired three children with three different German women- children that he has never seen and probably never will; children that most likely do not even know that their father lives thousands of miles away in an alien land.
While we are up close and personal with Swang, we see him at work, with his family…in his daily business of life. He is telling us his story and the life he has led. As he is doing so, we are seamlessly being introduced to, and exploring, various themes and subjects, namely: The original Aryans, Their rugged and beautiful land, Their unique and distinctive culture, The various theories about their origins and history, The genetic proof or otherwise of the so-called ‘superiority’ of the Aryans, The secret ‘system’- the shrouded in mystery network that brings German women to Ladakh for impregnation, The historical context of this obsession with ‘Race’ with special focus on Nazi Germany and its racist policies, Research works of other authors into this bizarre phenomenon, The emotional sub-text of these rather intimate transaction.
Therefore, while treating the viewer to the magnificent beauty of Ladakh, the film has the look and feel of a travelogue; study of the origin and history of the Aryans will have a suitably scholarly and authoritative tone to the narrative; dwelling in to the story of Swang, has the feel of an intimate, personal tête-à-tête; exposition of the shocking secret and the interview with the German lady who admits to having sex with an Aryan will has a dark, mysterious ‘whodunit’ treatment.
With its novel yet universally appealing theme, a sensational revelation of global interest, great production values this documentary is a must see.
