A friend introduced me to the almost obsolete tradition of ‘Mutah-al-Nikah’. The idea of a 'Contract Marriage' (in today's day & age) seemed like something made-up. But, it continued to haunt me. When I browsed through the various online resources, I was not just shaken by the concept, I was shocked at my own oblivion. For, ‘Mutah-al-Nikah’ is not a practice simply prevalent in modern India (astonishing, nonetheless), it is, on record, a worldwide phenomenon.
No sooner than that, I knew I wanted to explore the subject myself, also knowing that ultimately making a film on it was going to be exceptionally hard. And so it was.
Though I wanted my film to be as rooted to reality as possible, writing the feature-length script made me completely unsure of whether I could to do justice to the truth itself, since it really was that cruel.
The next agenda became that of keeping the essence of the initial story alive through a short film, but in a way that doesn’t offend anybody’s sentiments, and that's how 'Kabool Hai', a short musical came into being.
Despite sugar-coating the ‘problem’ with an underlying love-story, my actors - Noor and Sumeet couldn’t come out of their characters for days; I had seen Noor break down several times in the midst of preparing for her role.
‘Mutah-al-Nikah’ is one of the many things wrong with our society. Given that, the purpose of this short film - 'Kabool Hai' is only to get people to open their eyes to this prevailing cruelty, but without subjecting the audience to the gruesomeness that it is in reality.
