Under the Radar: The Mike Edmonds Story
Since his first break in Ken Loach's Black Jack (1979), Mike Edmonds has stolen scenes in some of cinema's biggest movies (Time Bandits, Return of the Jedi, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Harry Potter and more) and worked extensively in theatre, TV and radio. A true "actor's actor" who's also a huge hit with fans, he's met the challenges imposed by achondroplasia (or dwarfism) with his immense talent and a true dedication to the craft. This fascinating and warm-hearted documentary follows Mike from his early life in rural Essex (and dreams of joining the circus) to a life-changing decision to answer an advert for "midgets" in The Stage. The career that followed has been truly remarkable, encompassing Hollywood blockbusters, a stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company, iconic TV series like Maid Marian and Her Merry Men, pop videos and, of course, the occasional panto. Along with his fine acting skills, Mike's athleticism, endurance and sheer good humour have made him a favourite of countless cast members, directors and crew. Told in Mike's own words with a memorable selection of clips, photos and stylized animation, Under The Radar features contributions from an army of friends and collaborators including Terry Gilliam, Star Wars producer Robert Watts, actors Danny John Jules, Arti Shah and Jeremy "Boba Fett" Bulloch, as well as theatre producer Paul Elliott and author Mark Billingham.
We initailly produced a short version that was screened on the festival circuit in 2016, but then we extended it with additional content and interviews with Colin Firth, Michael Palin and others, releasing it as an 82 minute feature in 2019.

Opening Gala Film
Simon J Frith learnt his craft as a teenager making short films on Super 8 and 16mm in the late 1980s. This gave him a real understanding of making films to tight budgets and taught him the disciplines of efficiency and problem solving. For the past twenty years he has been mainly rooted in the industrial film market, producing, directing and editing hundreds of films for corporate clients, but has also produced and directed other genres of film including the occasional music video and in 2013 released a feature length documentary, 'In Search of Our Throwaway History'. Continuing to demonstrate his diversity, last year saw him return to his narrative based film roots with an award winning short film, 'Eva's Legacy'. His latest project, 'Under the Radar: The Mike Edmonds Story' is Simon's second feature documentary.
I've known actor Mike Edmonds for many years. He's appeared in about 15 major films, including Time Bandits, Return of the Jedi and The Dark Crystal. However, as he's usually hidden inside costumes or under layers of prosthetics he's not a familiar face, and when people discover that he's been in Star Wars they often mistake him for Kenny Baker. So I wanted to tell his story.
Mike's condition (achondroplasia) means that he's almost constantly in pain, undergoes frequent spine operations and has difficulty getting about. So when I began researching Mike's story I was expecting to find a tale of two parts: the story of the joy of working with screen legends on some of cinema's biggest films, tempered by a tale of a restricted lifestyle with some resentment. But boy, I was wrong. Mike's vigour for life, his upbeat personality and sense of humour is inspiring and leaves you feeling ready to take on the world.
I decided to shoot the film in cinemascope (2.4:1 ratio) to pay homage to his blockbuster film career. In addition I chose to include humorous animations both to help illustrate his anecdotes and also to provide comedic episodes amid the stories from his past collaborators and those about his own life.
My film is not an attempt to encourage audiences to feel pity - far from it. It's as much about Mike's positivity dealing with his condition as it is a celebration of all that's he's achieved. Its purpose is to be uplifting, inspiring and motivating. If everybody in the world had Mike's outlook on life it'd be a much better place.
