Award of Merit: Women Filmmakers
James and Danielle are award-winning documentary-makers, who live on the northern beaches in Sydney, Australia. Together, they have won eight film festival awards. They have tackled a range of tough social issues in their works ranging from wildlife poaching to child labour on their journeys through Central America for broadcast television, to issues looking at Australia's marine protected areas. James has worked in film his whole work life and has a marine science degree, and Danielle comes from a creative writing and journalism background. They love the sea, and are just thrilled to have met so many fascinating people on their adventures around Australia and overseas collecting stories and demystifying the issues and science around some of today's biggest challenges.
Did you know that a lot of David Attenborough's new series, Great Barrier Reef, was actually shot in its sister reef, the Coral Sea? And, did you know that this wild and special place is currently vulnerable to overfishing, because it is not a protected area? 'The Last Sea Treasure' is the fourth short documentary we've made on the value and beauty of marine protected areas. They are the special places you visit on holiday (like on the Great Barrier Reef); areas zoned by government giving nature a chance to return and thrive. We are now working on our fifth and sixth ocean documentaries, including 'The Map to Paradise,' which will look at the rise of marine protected areas globally. James and I will dedicate our lives to documenting the importance of these critical places, which the famous underwater explorer, Sylvia Earle, calls 'hope spots' in a blue world which has been sadly devastated by multiple pressures, including by overfishing. - Danielle Ryan, co-Director
