Growing up in multicultural communities in both California and Guam introduced him to different cultures and diasporas. When he moved back to the Philippines as a teenager, he was culture-shocked and confused about his cultural identity. He regularly has conversations about cultural identity with his friends from Guam who now migrate across the globe – Sweden, California, New York, Utah, Germany, and other countries. Thus began a journey of soul-searching and filmmaking.
His recent short film, “Tahanan” was accepted into two international film festivals last year, 2020 – Cinemalaya and Sinag Maynila.
Stories that concern oppression, discrimination, and injustice are close to my heart. I feel the need to explore social issues that not only affect ourselves, but also affect the community around us. How we treat an individual is a very much relative to how we treat each other. These are stories that involve relationships, identities, dreams, and hope. And in many ways, these are not just the stories of the Filipino, but of everyone else.
