Alex Lockwood is BAFTA winning director from Bromsgrove, in Worcestershire. Alex received the 2019 BAFTA for Best British Short film for his no budget documentary, 73 Cows, about a beef farmer who could no longer send his animals to slaughter. The film has received focus all around the world, as well as being featured on national news stations. The film was also screened at the Europe- an Parliament in Brussels before a Q&A with Alex and the film’s subjects, in order to inspire change before policy makers. Alex seeks to inspire real change with his films and challenge his audiences by conveying subjects in a light in which they may not have been presented previously. He hopes to one day move into features.
When I stumbled across Jay and Katja’s story in the national news, I instantly knew I had to make a documentary about it. With absolutely no budget with which to make the film, I gathered a small crew of 4 like minded passionate indie film makers. Over the course of the next 7 months we filmed 73 Cows in between our day jobs. Having been enjoyed all over the world, being covered on national news, screening at European Parliament, and ultimately winning a BAFTA, the film has achieved so much more than I ever imagined. I feel that our film and our story, typifies the essence of independent film making.
