ASHEN

Elias, who has been diagnosed with lung cancer, goes with his best friend Mario to watch a movie at the cinema. The night, at first uneventful and dull, ends up in a disturbing encounter with death, in which Elias will have to face the darkest side of his illness to discover if this final stage of his life brings the peace he so longs for.

Director Biography - Braulio Fierros, Amhed Hilerio

Amhed Sai Hilerio Angeles was born on January 8, 2001, in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas. Having always been an avid fan of television and radio, Hilerio decided to enroll at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in the city of Monterrey to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Communication and Film. It was during his time there that he solidified his passion for cinema and audiovisual media. Hilerio took part in various short film projects such as "Nido" (2019), as a cameraman and cinematographer, and "San Pedro 400" (2022), where he served as the director. In 2022, he co-directed and edited the short film "Grave Error" alongside Braulio Fierros, which was selected for the fiction category at the first edition of the short film festival of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Braulio Fierros Islas, born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, is 22 years old and is currently studying Communication and Film at Tec de Monterrey. He studied high school at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, where his career began to take off, as he made his first formal short film with a budget, which made him win several awards such as "Best Director", "Best Visual Effects" and "People's Choice Award". This set the tone to continue on this path and develop other short films such as “Ius dispondidi” and “TEMPESTAD”. With the first he managed to obtain a Scholarship at the Vancouver Film School and with the second he managed to compete at the ECOFILM festival 2019. These events motivated him more and more to continue telling stories, thus creating a YouTube channel of comedy sketches in 2019, called “Ninety Two Films”. In 2022, he co-directed and edited the short film “Grave Error”, with his partner Amhed Hilerio, which was selected to compete in the fiction category at the first short film festival of Tecnológico de Monterrey.

In January 2023 both directors entered the Film Production and Direction specialization at the Tecnológico de Monterrey where they once again had the opportunity to co-direct in what would become their first big and most ambitious short film, "Pálida" / “Ashen” (2023).

Amhed Sai Hilerio Angeles nació en Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, el 8 de enero del 2001. Su pasión por la televisión y la radio fueron parte fundamental de su decisión para entrar al Tecnológico de Monterrey en la ciudad de Monterrey para estudiar la carrera de Licenciatura en Comunicación, en donde afirmó su pasión por el cine y los medios audiovisuales. Durante su estancia en Monterrey participó en algunos cortometrajes como lo son: “Nido” (2019) como camarógrafo y cinematógrafo. “San Pedro 400 “(2022) como director. En 2022 co-dirigió y editó el cortometraje “Grave Error” junto con su compañero Braulio Fierros logrando quedar seleccionados en el área de ficción en el primer festival de cortometrajes del Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Estudió la preparatoria en el Tecnológico de Monterrey, donde comenzó a tomar forma su carrera, pues elaboró su primer cortometraje formal con un presupuesto, con el cual ganó varios premios como “Mejor Director”, “Mejores Efectos Visuales" y “People's Choice Award". Esto dio la pauta para seguir por este camino y desarrollar otros cortometrajes como “Ius disponendi” y “TEMPESTAD”. Con el primero logró obtener una Beca en Vancouver Film School y con el segundo logró entrar a concursar al ECOFILM festival 2019. Estos sucesos lo motivaron cada vez más a seguir contando historias, creando así en 2019 un canal en youtube de sketches de comedia, llamado “Ninety TWO Films”. En 2022 co-dirigió y editó el cortometraje “Grave Error”, con el cuál él y su compañero Amhed Hilerio lograron quedar seleccionados en el área de ficción en el primer festival de cortometrajes del Tecnológico de Monterrey.

En enero del 2023 ambos directores entraron a la concentración de Producción y Dirección Cinematográfica en el Tecnológico de Monterrey en donde volvieron a tener una co-dirección en cuál se convertiría en su primer cortometraje más ambicioso y producido, “Pálida" (2023).

Director Statement

Cancer is a disease that causes pain in a huge amount of people, and many times it is thought that those affected by cancer will do everything they can to fight against this disease. Nevertheless we rarely think about all the pressure and emotional damage that we generate in those people by asking them to fight for the ones they love the most, rather than to do it for themselves.

This is "Ashen", a story about the duel with death of someone who is living his final moments. With this short film we wanted to set forth what someone in this plight could feel in a very unconventional way. Uncertainty, pressure, and the panic of not holding the reins over their future can break these people's emotions and thoughts.

Ten million people bear this weight every day, and every day they have to deal with the question "why me?", while we ask them to keep going. When in reality ... they just want to find some peace in an ocean that seems to be filled with only suffering. And that is the purpose of our story, learning to let go of those you love the most, and learning to leave in the best way. Even beyond that, "Ashen" is about accepting death as a gift, since it only hunts the living... but takes good care of its own.

El cáncer es una enfermedad que causa muchísimo dolor en millones de personas. Muchas veces se piensa que aquellos afectados por el cáncer harán todo lo posible por luchar contra esta enfermedad, pero no nos detenemos a pensar en toda la presión y desgaste emocional que generamos en aquellas personas al exigirles que luchen por no dejar atrás a sus seres queridos, más que a que lo hagan por ellos mismos.

Esto es “Pálida”, una historia sobre el duelo con la muerte que vive alguien en sus etapas finales. Con este cortometraje quisimos expresar lo que alguien en esta posición puede llegar a sentir de una forma poco convencional. La incertidumbre, la presión, y el miedo de no tener control alguno sobre el futuro, pueden llegar a quebrantar las emociones y pensamientos de aquellas almas que están a punto de dejar este mundo.

Diez millones de personas soportan este peso día con día, y día con día tienen que lidiar con el “¿porqué a mi?”. Cuando la realidad es … que muchos de ellos solo quieren encontrar un poco de paz en un mar que parece estar lleno de solo sufrimiento, y ese es el fin de nuestra historia, aprender a dejar ir y aprender a irse de la mejor manera. Aún más allá de eso, “Pálida” trata sobre la aceptación de la muerte como un regalo, ya que está solo nos afecta a los vivos … pero cuida muy bien de los suyos.
