Bracken Rain

Having lost interest in his work, photographer Te-je goes on a trip with his wife to the island in the bracken rain*(monsoon) season.
After he had given a ride to a mysterious woman in red, strange events start to happen to him. A car accident, the disappearance of his wife, and the police tries to wrongly accuse him of a case unknown to him.
However, while he goes on a search for his missing wife wandering about oreums(hilly area) and woods, he takes photographs of the fantastic landscape, which allow Te-je to overcome his state of mannerism.

Te-je's adventures, to what extent are they real or fantasy? All of them could be his imagination, or experienced reality. The important thing is, his adventures have turned into fantastical photos that exist right in front of him.

(What is 'Bracken Rain'?: When cherry blossoms wither and spring days fade away, it is the monsoon season on Jeju Island. Once the rainy season in April is over, woods on the island are filled with bracken which grow at one go. People call this period 'bracken rain'.)

Director Statement

Jeju is a unique island.
Especially, the little lava hills in Jeju called oreum, up to 360 of them on the island, create individual landscapes.
Few years ago, when I went up the Yongnuni Oreum, the desire to transpose such seductive landscape onto screen grew in my mind.
What if the protagonist who is a visitor to this island goes through unexpected incidents and these turn out to be adventures that eventually change his character?

I wanted the incidents to stimulate the curiosity of spectators, although unpredictable.
The increased curiosity will be satisfied in the epilogue, but I tried to make the story so that it could be interpreted differently according to the viewer.

While feeling skeptic about his life, Te-je becomes embroiled in strange cases and tries all his might to find his disappeared wife. Te-je finds himself wound up in a situation where he has to solve the mystery all by himself, but fails. Right at the moment when he feels utterly helpless and everything has come to naught, Te-je picks up his camera in front of the beautiful scenery and succeeds in taking fantastical photographs.
I wanted to portray the story of a person who feels not quite living up to 100% of what life could offer, who eventually succeeds(or dreams of succeeding) in escaping from his insufficient life at some moment, in a slow-tempo thriller.
