Karie (Black)

Karie means Black. While there are tonal variations in culture across the southern multicultural, multi-religious Indian state called Kerala, one thing that remains unchanged is the caste system. Caste is the dangerous villain that creates irreparable damage to the social fabric and ostracizes individuals based on their skin tone. Karie explores the intricacies and power equations in the grim caste system in the form of the dialects and subtle language nuances influenced by caste. The film travels through the village with two men whose mission is to conduct a ritual on behalf of their colleague who works abroad.

Director Biography - Shanavas Naranipuzha

Born and brought up in Naranipuzha, a village on the border of Malappuram district (Kerala-India), Shanavas is a commerce graduate who entered visual media as an editor. After working for a television channel for 3 years, he joined an advertisement firm in the Middle East and got the experience of working in 14 different countries. Currently he is the Creative Head of Eye to Eye Media School & Film Production. He had made a handful of short fiction films, which won him many accolades, before this debut feature film.

Director Statement

The film Karie has been enthusiastically received and critically acclaimed in Kerala and elsewhere. It is a film that looks at the contemporary caste-ridden society through the eyes of a few common people in the background of folklore and art.
