Iron Dream

Two friends do the usual route home after a day of school. To their surprise a train arrives at the station, where the passengers exist. Is it a dream, it is real? The two friends enter the train to take a trip between past and present.

The dream of having rail intersects with the experiences and routines of two friends and a turtle, which observes the trip. Symbol of concentration, sustainability, has no illusions and thus continues its journey. The iron rails, dark force, covered in rust, once acclaimed bearing the weight of the “transportation of the future". Future? What future is this? The forgotten dream of a clouded train in time, is here remembered for his absence.

Director Statement

Viseu is the largest city in Europe without rail. For decades the rail extensions of Dão and Vale do Vouga contributed to the strengthening of trade in Viseu, facilitated the access of populations of students, tourists and workers to the district capital, allowed the transport of commodities and goods necessary for the community life of the region.
In 1988 the rail extension Dão is disabled and in 1990 it is the turn of Vouga extension. Since then Viseu never saw the train arrive. There is a new Viseense generation who was born and lives without this transportation. The only link between the city and the region around is the road. There remain some vestiges of the train existence through the walls of some stations, now abandoned, through some bridges and plates that signaled the line of the train. The memories that remain are those who have seen and used this transportation. On the other hand, the younger generation has no memory of seeing, hearing and feeling the train, this giant iron steaming. Several sections of the lines of Dão and Vouga were transformed into an Ecotrail, so anyone can walk, run or ride a bike and go to "ride" the train. Where is the train? We do not see it but, we dream about it.
In this fictional narrative, within a the documentary context, we try to remember the past, real, through the journey between "what is" and "what it was". The turtle observes, listens, supports the reality. It moves according to the time. In it we represent time and memory. Thus we insist on documentary using a fictionalized narrative through the journey of two friends. We believe that this way we contemplate reality through a fact which is based on history and stories.
