HUNTING FOR FISH

REAL RETRO. REAL GRINDHOUSE. REAL INDEPENDENCE. REAL FILM.

22 years in the making comes - HUNTING FOR FISH!

An ex-insurance fraud investigator turned thief, and her partner, a cocky black market dealer, are hired by a corrupt diamond jeweler to steal a fortune in diamonds from his own store in order to collect a hefty insurance claim. Before the job takes place the diamond jeweler enlists Wilson Fish, an elusive thief and con man, to help with the heist. What they don’t know is that the conniving Wilson Fish has a plan of his own— to betray everyone and take the diamonds for himself.

Armed with a 16mm Arriflex BL, a Nagra III with a Sennheiser 416 boom microphone, a few tungsten practical light bulbs and two four foot shiny boards powered by the magnificent Colorado sun, Lance Lucero began production on the ambitious micro-budgeted film HUNTING FOR FISH. The risks were high and the odds were against the production, but the movie Gods chose to smile on the production and the film was completed. Yeah... it took a couple of decades... SO WHAT! ART TAKES TIME!

This film is OLD SCHOOL! Just like all the films that inspired most filmmakers of today. Made in the tradition of the filmmakers we all idolize, such as, John Huston, Sergio Leone, Frances Ford Coppola, George Lucas, etc.

Director Statement

I have been to quite a few festivals the last few years and I got to say this... Maybe film festivals of today should be called Movie Festivals because they show nothing but HD videos. If a festival is not going to show FILMS SHOT ON FILM, they should not be calling themselves film festivals. Or at least, have a separate film category, to justify the title of the film festival. Film and HD are not the same thing...

GUTS... a tool of the filmmaking trade...

HUNTING FOR FISH, my feature film debut. A film of TRUE independence.

I get it, festivals and distributors want MOVIE STARS or some sort of MASSIVE MARKETABILITY to represent or showcase a film. Or in this age, an HD video... UGH!

Now, for the sensitive types, I'm not totally bashing HD; it does have its place in the world, I just feel that true cinema is about FILM, the chemical process, not zeros and ones.

Heck, I'm not even sure judges or movie goers even understand what REAL FILM is anymore... People are programmed to think HD is the standard in movie making now days. It's a depressing time for REAL filmmakers.

I'm making a choice to preserve the art and craft of filmmaking. This truly sets me apart from other indie filmmakers now days, or rather digital movie makers. I want to produce films in a traditional manner in order to retain the integrity and art of cinema.

Plus, I want to have fun. No pretentiousness. No social cause. Just pure entertainment.

I give you HUNTING FOR FISH. No stars. A shoestring budget. A 16mm Arriflex BL film camera. A Nagra III with a Sennheiser 416 boom microphone. A few tungsten practical light bulbs. Two four foot shiny boards powered by the magnificent Colorado sun. Some guns. And a gutsy cast and crew that believed in the screenplay. THAT'S what it takes to make a renegade micro-budgeted film!

The risks were high and the odds were against the production, but the movie Gods chose to smile on the production and the film was completed. The negative is in perfect order and the analog 1/4 inch sound is vibrant. The current output of the film is a new transfer from the original negative to 1080p, 2K and fully color-corrected. The film has character! Why? Because its unique. The film stock I used is long gone.

Just like all the films of the past that inspired most filmmakers of today, I made my film in the tradition of the filmmakers we all idolize, such as, John Huston, Sergio Leone, Frances Ford Coppola, George Lucas, etc. The cinematic pallet is painted by TRUE saturation and GRAIN structure (I'm finding people today either don't understand grain structure or have any idea what it is). I didn't waste time and money shooting on HD just to try and make it look like film; this is the REAL DEAL!
