Ayo Lawson and Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim, a remarkable LGBTQ couple, are on a mission to reshape the landscape of Nigerian cinema by creating films that champion representation and amplify the voices of marginalised communities. In a country grappling with deep-rooted homophobia, their partnership serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring change and challenging societal norms.
Ayo Lawson, 29, and Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim, 33, both grew up in Nigeria with a shared desire to see authentic LGBTQ stories on screen. Driven by their own experiences and the lack of representation in the media, they embarked on a journey to create the representation they never saw growing up.
In a country where homophobia is prevalent, Ayo and Uyaiedu fearlessly tackle societal taboos, using the power of storytelling to challenge prejudice and promote acceptance. Through their films, they strive to shed light on the struggles, joys, and complexities of LGBTQ individuals in Nigeria, offering a glimpse into their lives and creating relatable characters that defy stereotypes.
One of Uyaiedu's notable accomplishments is her groundbreaking film "Ifé," the first lesbian film in Nigeria. Released in 2020, the film sparked conversations nationwide and earned Uyaiedu a place on BBC's prestigious list of 100 Women. "Ifé" not only showcased Uyaiedu's talent as a writer and director but also marked a significant milestone in Nigerian cinema, pushing boundaries and breaking barriers.
