To Nanda Taukiri, filmmaking isn't just a career, it's a philosophy. A way of seeing the world and making sense of life. Nanda has lived in many different parts of New Zealand and before aspiring to be a filmmaker, he was working as a rock climbing instructor in Wellington.
After his love for performance led him to pursue a diploma in On Screen Acting at South Seas Film and Television School, he decided to use his training to help him craft the stories that he wanted to see on the big screen. So he went back to film school to study the two things closest to his heart, Directing and Screenwriting.
Nanda's goal as a filmmaker is to create original stories that push the limits of film as a creative medium while also ringing true to the melody of the human heart.
With horror movies the main objective is always to put fear into the hearts of the audience and in my mind real life is more fearful than the spectacle of fiction. Imagine being attacked by your own mother, someone you are supposed to trust to love and take care of you. Unlike alien abductions and zombie apocalypses this is something that happens everyday and could potentially happen to anybody, the thought of it alone is enough to make anyone a little sick.
With CRAVING my aim was to craft a story that combined horrors from real life with the fantasy and awe of a supernatural horror to make something that terrifies on all levels.
I was inspired by the practical effects and the outrageous blood and gore from the films of John Carpenter, Dario Argento and the low budget efforts of early Peter Jackson as well as being inspired by the surrealism and dream like anxiety found in the works of David Lynch and Ingmar Bergman. I was raised home schooled and spent a lot of time watching films when I was younger, this is what spawned my passion for film making and it was important to me to borrow from my influences and combine them in ways that would create something totally new, a vision of my own.
CRAVING was shot over the most intense four days of my life with next to no money. The crew are among some of the most passionate film makers I have met and proved to be expert at finding creative and resourceful ways to bring my ambitious script to life. WIth our efforts combined I believe this is my strongest short film to date, a horrifying vision of possession, obsession and transformation.
