Ajay

After a young man commits suicide, an NGO decides to launch an investigation into the matter. This powerful drama follows the investigator as he collects statements from witnesses, building a picture of the hatred and persecution that led to the boy’s death.

Ajay was created for The Humsafar Trust Media Fellowship 2017. It won the Best Narrative Short Award at Kashish- Mumbai International Queer Film Festival in May 2018. It was shortlisted for the Iris Prize 2018 in Cardiff, and also won Best Screenplay and Best Short Film (Runner-up) at Vintage International Film Festival, Kolhapur.

Director Biography - Vikrant Dhote

Vikrant Dhote is a performer, writer, and director based in Mumbai. He has a B.A in English Literature from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai and has studied at the London International School of Performing Arts. He has trained under renowned theatre
practitioners including Sankar Venkateswaran, Prabhat Bhaskaran, Heisnam Tomba (Kalakshetra, Manipur), VKK Hariharan, Raghunandana (Ninasam), Sanjeev Suvarna,
and Veenapani Chawla (Adhishakti).
He has been featured in television ads for Subway, Kurl-On, and Smart Investor. His corporate work includes diversity training (using theatre) for Vodafone, Aditya Birla Group, and Metro Services.

He also works with young people and has facilitated short courses and workshops for students at The Heritage School Rohini, Vidya Gyan Sitapur, Vidya Gyan Noida, Abhudaya School, and Shishuvan School in Mumbai.

He currently performs in Shikhandi-​ ​The​ ​Story​ ​of​ ​the​ ​In-Betweens​ ​(Old World Theatre Festival New Delhi, Serendipity Arts Festival Goa), directed by Faezeh Jalali. Other performance work includes 07/07/07​ (NCPA Centrestage Festival 2016 and winner of Best Ensemble at Mahindra Excellence in
Theatre Awards 2016), based on the prison diaries of Reyhaneh Jabbari- a 19-year old Iranian woman who was hanged in 2014 for stabbing her rapist in self-defence; Keep​ ​Calm​ ​and​ ​Hashtag​, a devised play for 13-18 year olds based on gender in public and virtual spaces (supported by the Goethe-Institut ad mentored by Sophia Stepf); his solo theatre show Dekho​ ​Magar​ ​Pyaar​ ​Se​, a
quirky take on gender and sexuality, was developed through the Gender​ ​Bender​ ​Grant​ ​(supported by Goethe-Institut and Sandbox Collective) awarded in 2015 and was performed at Thespo Fringe 2015, the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2016 and several venues across Bangalore.

Any​ ​Other​ ​Day​, a short film that he wrote, produced and co-directed won the Best Emerging Director Award at KASHISH- Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, the APQFFA Best
Short Film Award at the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival in November 2017, the Largo Award for Best Writing, and was shortlisted for the Toto Funds the Arts Awards 2016. It has also
been screened at festivals in Seattle, Austin, Connecticut, Dallas, Shanghai, Brisbane, Bangalore, and Chennai. In 2017, he was awarded The​ ​Humsafar​ ​Trust​ ​Media​ ​Fellowship​ to create digital content focussed on sexuality.
