13 Steps
"True Grit" meets "The Road"
The story is narrated by an OLDER ALICE, reflecting on her childhood. We meet TOM BURROUGHS, a feared outlaw, and his six-year-old daughter, ALICE, as they camp in the desert. Their tender, loving relationship is immediately established, with Tom's hardened exterior melting only for her.
Tom, along with the volatile WILL and his quicker, more easygoing brother JACK, robs a mine payroll stagecoach in Prescott. The heist goes violently wrong. The stage guard and Will kill each other in a shootout, Tom is shot, and Jack is killed by the bartender, HENRY. Amid the chaos, Tom spares an unarmed observer, COLE, a man with a pastor's collar.
Wounded, Tom retrieves Alice but is soon pursued by a posse. To save Alice from being caught in the crossfire, he surrenders. In a heartbreaking scene, he entrusts Alice to Cole, extracting a promise for her safety.
A week later, Tom is marched to the gallows. In a final, powerful scene, he says goodbye to Alice, who is now clean and dressed in a new dress, cared for by Cole and his wife, SARAH. He ascends the 13 steps to his death, finding peace in seeing his daughter walk away to a better life. The film ends with Alice retrieving her forgotten wooden bear from the mud, a symbol of her father's love, as her older self narrates how Cole and Sarah raised her, allowing his legacy to be one of love and hope, not violence.
