Tony Tambi is a Nigerian-born, Cameroon-raised, U.S based actor and filmmaker. After spending the first seven years of his life in Nigeria and the next fourteen in Cameroon, he moved to Minnesota in 1999 to further his education. Four years later, he arrived in Los Angeles with the goal of pursuing an acting career.
In his second year in LA, he received an NAACP Theatre Award Nomination for playing the character Monday in The God Botherers. Other plays followed including the critically-acclaimed world premiere Butterflies of Uganda, A Providential Occurrence, The Fair Maid of the West and Saturday Night at The Palace. His first TV credit was a co-starring role on The Unit, followed by other appearances on Scrubs, NCIS Los Angeles and a recurring role on Nip Tuck.
After various starring and supporting roles in numerous films, he co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in the short film CHAPTER ONE. It was awarded an Award of Merit from Best Shorts Competition, and went on to play at various festivals nationwide, culminating in multiple airings on PBS-KCVR, as part of its Shorts Showcase Festival. He recently completed work on the dark comedy OSCAR (previously titled FILMMAKERS ANONYMOUS) and served as a producer on THE ASPECT RATIO. His screenwriting debut LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT was one of the eight projects selected to join Forest Whitaker's JuntoBox Films Inaugural Feature Film Incubator Program in 2014.
My name is Tony Tambi and I’m the creator and writer of the web series CON$EQUENCES. Even though I did not direct this episode, I directed four out of the seven episodes, so I felt like I was the right person to write a DIrector's Statement.
Many people say traditional forms of media don’t give them the representation they need and I think this is very true. Why wait for that to change when you can create that change? This web series came about because I felt the need for a more diverse portrayal of minorities like myself.
Back in 2012, I co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in the short film CHAPTER ONE. It went on to play at various festivals nationwide, culminating in multiple airings on PBS-KCVR, as part of its Shorts Showcase Festival. CHAPTER ONE is about a woman who wants her immigrant boyfriend to kill her husband in exchange for marital and legal status in the country. She ends up getting scammed by the boyfriend. I decided to develop this idea into a TV show, which took a closer look into the life of the boyfriend - a reformed internet scammer. The pilot episode of the show was re-written as a seven-episode web series that became Season 1 of CON$EQUENCES.
My goal with CON$EQUENCES is to make it very similar to most serialized TV shows: great storytelling, thought-provoking entertainment, ‘end of episode’ cliffhangers and intriguing characters. There are also quite a few artistic liberties I took with the show, like breaking the 4th wall and multiple character voice overs.
The BBC TV series HUSTLE is a good example of a similar type of show. It was probably my greatest influence in creating CON$EQUENCES. Ocean’s Eleven and the sequels come to mind. Another influence would be the Ed Burns’ movie CONFIDENCE. However, the main difference between CON$EQUENCES and other similarly themed shows is the fact that this one is anchored by adult Yahoo Boys (think “Nigerian Prince” type email scams). With African-born Americans as leads, the show is also unique in that it provides a different perspective of the immigrant experience in the U.S. Many times Africans are associated with internet scamming, so I went with that, but flipped it and brought in the Robin Hood aspect.
CON$EQUENCES is about cons; the life of reformed con artists and it also takes a look at the inner workings of the con. By breaking down how most cons work, we hope that the audience will realize how easy it to get scammed but also how easy it is to stay clear of these scams.
